Annual Event - Taste of the City

Three years ago, I discovered an annual event called "Taste of the City", I been a attending ever since. The reasons why I love this event:
1. you can try many restaurants without having to travel very far.
2. you can get small portion of their signature dishes to try for a cheap price (between $1-4/dish).
3. it's free to attend.
** isn't it interesting that the tandoori chicken is roasted in garbage cans, or at least garbage can lookalike ;)
3 years ago, this event was hosted at the Plaza of Nations, but I guess rent went up, now it's at the PNE. Here is a picture that about sums it up. Each white tent represent a restaurant. They all serve sample size of their signature dish, which some are cooked/prepare right before your eyes. They also have a cooking stage, where chefs from the featured restaurants show off their culinary skills. Now on to the food that I've tried.
prawn bouillabaisse & citrus vanilla cured salmon tartar (Ebo), lobster shrimp BLT & pull pork slider (Saltlik)
The prawn bouillabaisse was $4, and well worth it. It was very rich and flavorful, thus one of my favorite. On the other hand, the salmon tartar ($2.50) wasn't very good. It lacked in flavor. Both sandwiches from Saltlik restaurant were good. But I liked the lobster and shrimp BLT($2.50) better, because they used real lobster and good bacon. However the bread was a hard to chew.
double dynamite roll (Toyotomi restaurant), yakitori (Zakkushi restaurant), tandoori chicken (Handi Cuisine of India)
I like the double dynamite roll ($2.50), it was good, especially with the 2 prawn tempura. The yakitori was total disappointment. It was not flavorful or juicy with many burnt corners. The tandoori chicken (only $2.50) was the complete opposite, it was juicy and flavorful. However it was very messy to eat (no knife was provided) and the tandoori sauce stained my fingers. Despite the difficulty we had with this dish, it was still one of the better tasting one we tried. They line up for this stand was about 20 min.
crab cake (Kingston Taphouse and Grille), grill scallop and prawn (Capones), ahi tuna (Kingston Taphouse and Grille)
The crab cake only cost $2, and it was well worth it. It was packed with real crab meat. The ahi tuna ($2.50) was good as well, but the sauce was a bit salty. My 3rd favorite of the day has to go to the grill scallop and prawn ($4). Both are grilled to perfection, still tender but cooked. I love the white and green asparagus as well.
spicy peanut noodle, Thai citrus salad (Noodle Box)
Both of the above dishes is from the Noodle Box. I enjoyed the spicy peanut noodles, despite the fact that I don't really like peanut butter. I thought the sauce was creamy and not very heavy on the peanut taste. On the other hand, I was disappointed with the citrus salad. It was very average. I loved Noodle Box packaging, it's so cute with the Chinese take out box and their wooden fork.
And to wash all the food down, we bought the Mandarin/Lemon and Sencha Tao Tea. Both drinks were good, refreshing and cold, perfect for the hot weather. But before we bought the Tao tea, we also tried the mango lemonade (only $1.50) from Maurya, which from past experience, I knew I would like it. It was sweet with detectable mango flavor. I would have liked to try some of the food items from Maurya as well, but the line up was just too long. (you didn't have to wait in line to buy a drink, thank God for that).
Now we are done with the food, I would like to present you the Secret Eden awards. In the category for the "best decorated food tent"... drum roll please....
Dona Cata Mexican Cuisine, Handi Cuisine of India, and Fortune House Seafood Restaurant.
In the category for "worst lineup", the awards go to Kingston Taphouse and Grille (close to 30 min), Handi Cuisine of India (20 min), and Maurya (did not attempt, but probably 20 min).
And the final and most important category is "best food of the day", and the awards go to....
Ebo restaurant for the prawn bouillabaisse. Kingston Taphouse and Grille for both the crab cake and the ahi tuna. Lastly, Capones for the grill prawn and scallop.
I would say this event is very successful, because the amount of people there proved it all. I am pretty sure I saw a couple of food blogger with their high tech DSLR as well. In fact, I think at one point, we were even sitting at the same table. So I guess my one piece of advice for next year is go early to avoid the line up. I usually go about 11:45am (event start at 12), early enough that the stands are open, but not much people yet.
In the end, I happily conclude that I was satisfied with this year's Taste of the City and now looking forward to next year's event.

Jul 20, 2009 at 12:39 AMI am glad that you blogged about this event as well! Noticeably, you had some dishes I did not have. Also, you had a lot more patience than me. I chose not to go to Maurya and Kingston just because of the long lines!
About the "garbage" tank: actually that is a 55gl container. In Panama, people take those containers, cut them in half and use it as a grill. ;) -
